10 Years of Engineering the Nation (2009-2019)
Feb 18, 2020
As we celebrate 10 years of developing home-grown, innovative engineering solutions, from fit-for-purpose relocatable platforms to producing sustainable bio-methane derived from palm oil effluent, we recollect MTC’s most memorable achievements from our decade of engineering the nation.
Our History
2009
MTC Engineering was incorporated. The company of 4 engineers began to provide services for engineering consultancy, naval architecture and marine solutions from its small office at Plaza Masalam, Seksyen 9 Shah Alam.
2010
Expanded MTC’s portfolio to provide engineering consultancy on all marine disciplines as well as a dedicated Project Management Team.
With a concerted initiative to build engineering talent from the ground up, MTC pursued support from the National Oceanographic Directorate to throw engineering competitions in schools. Proudly, MTC established the Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicles (UROVEC) Competition in secondary schools around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor for 5 consecutive years. MTC has also sponsored and supported rugby teams from various schools in goals to further promote their brand to younger generations.
2011
MTC’s flair quickly became noticed by PETRONAS Carigali for its pilot project and was awarded the turnkey EPCIC for its upcoming leasing of the company’s first FPSO - FPSO Nautica Muar. This had opened up new services for the company - floater chartering and wellhead solutions. With such early recognition of MTC’s capabilities, its presence was instantly discerned as the local up-and-comer in the O&G industry.
2012
FPSO Nautica Muar successfully deployed to and reached first oil at Kayu Manis South East field.
To compliment its turnkey EPCIC services for a total asset solutions, MTC also established its own in-house Operation & Maintenance team - the precursor for MTC to show its aptitude as a comprehensive solutions provider, from EPCIC, to floater chartering, to O&M and also T&I.
Due to the growing numbers of staff, MTC had to relocate from its Plaza Masalam office to Laman Seri, Seksyen 13 Shah Alam.
2013
After a quick 6 months at KMSE field, Nautica Muar redeployed to Anjung Kecil field. At Anjung Kecil, MTC operations were proven to be incredibly cost-effective and straightforward in its performance, as it achieved the lowest unit production cost of the whole of Carigali Malaysia Operations at the time being, amounting to less than USD10 bopd at a production rate of USD12,ooo bopd. Fast-forward to 2019, MTC beat its own UPC again at Jitang field for its FPSO operation.
To further take business-friendly and profit-maximizing steps, MTC expands its catalog to also provide complete solutions for Early Production Systems.
2014
MTC’s first Intellectual Property, the trademark ‘Humming Bird Offshore Solutions’ was patented. This IP is a fit-for-purpose, relocatable platform that is able to deploy to 3 fields in the span of 5 years. MTC is the first operator that relocates the same FPSO at 3 different fields twice.
Since this year, MTC continuously hires interns and fresh graduates to ensure that its commitment to develop local talent is actualized. They are encouraged to participate and contribute in an engaging and collaborative habitat within company grounds. To this day, some of the fresh graduates still remain with the company throughout their professional careers.

In line with its close relationship with academia, MTC worked together with Universiti Malaysia Terengganu for a Wave Generator concept that can produce sustainable energy for the grid. This move was MTC’s first endeavor into renewable energy and an exploration of its engineering range.
As the company grew in projects it also grew in size - MTC employed up to 100 permanent staff of majority engineers of well-rounded and extensive engineering acumen. This led its second move to the current MTC headquarters: MTC Campus at Seksyen U8 Shah Alam.
2016
MTC Group received its first ISO, which was awarded to MTC Floating Solutions.
The Civil & Structural department has been awarded for the design, building and completion of an ice factory in Tok Bali, Kelantan that will supply local fishermen with vital resources for the improvement of their local industry.
2017
The company’s second FPSO launched - MTC Ledang, which executed the fastest recorded FPSO conversion to first oil of an unprecedented 6 months. MTC Ledang’s course directed towards Ophir field, however, the field was short lived. The floater then became novated to Vestigo Petroleum for an Extended Well Test at Kayu Manis field once again to which it found prolific results. A new complete production system will be developed specifically for KMSE. From this point forward, the company has a clear focus to embark on mature, marginal and late life field development.
Shortly thereafter, MTC in collaboration with Transwater wins PETRONAS first Technology Challenge on Monetisation of Associated Gas from Offshore Flares by providing inventive solutions for Floating Compressed Natural Gas (FCNG) systems. The competition required economic and resourceful solutions to utilize hydrocarbon resource and reduce carbon intensity in its process.

Nov 22, 2019MTC Engineering Sdn Bhd (MTCE), a Malaysia company specialising in FPSO leasing, field production operation, and turnkey development for mature and marginal fields, is a strong advocate for utilisation of locally developed new technologies. Since 2013, MTCE has been utilising locally developed technologies onboard of its fleets of floaters.
Staying true to this commitment, MTCE together with its technology partner Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) is moving on to a new milestone in development of the Free-Piston Linear Generator (FPLG) for offshore application. The FPLG prototype shall be tested onboard of the FPSO MTC Ledang utilising hydrocarbon gas from Jitang field located offshore Terengganu as its feed gas in Q2 of year 2020.
Main features of the FPLG is as follows:
- Production of electric power by harvesting high pressure hydrocarbon gas which otherwise would be flared thus promoting reduction in greenhouse gas emission which is in-line with Paris Agreement 2016. Furthermore, the electrical energy generated will be contributed back to the grid hence reducing overall operating cost (waste to wealth)
- Free motion piston (Free-Piston) which creates flexibility that allows it to work with wide range of pressure and gas composition (flexi-fuel) such as high-CO2 natural gas
- The reciprocating motion caused by gas expansion / combustion cuts the magnetic flux thus generating electrical energy
- Consist of only one moving part resulting to high mechanical efficiency and power to weight ratio
- Modular concept allows scalable power generation output
